The Twingi Experience: History

Nature experienceOffer for groups

The road through the Twingi is one of the historically important traffic routes in Switzerland. On a gentle walk we discover witnesses of former road construction and learn exciting stories about trading with Italy.

The Twingi is one of the most impressive natural sites in the Binntal Nature Park, where every year artists, with their work, conduct a dialogue between nature and art. The road through the gorge with its small walls, natural tunnels and drainage systems is a well-preserved example of early road construction. It was therefore included in the Inventory of Historic Transport Routes in Switzerland IVS and restored as part of a Nature Park project.
A bus drove through the Twingi to Binn for the first time in 1938. Before that, the inner Binntal was only accessible via a narrow, vertiginous mule track. In winter, however, the Twingi Gorge remained impassable even after the road was built and the Binn Valley was cut off from the outside world.
For centuries, the Twingi Gorge was the most difficult passage on the way from Goms to Domodosossola. Traders, smugglers, soldiers and pilgrims went over the Albrun Pass.
