Protected areas

The Binntal has a large number of landscape and nature conservation areas of national, cantonal and communal importance.

Binntal nature reserve

In 1964, the municipality of Binn, the Valais Association for Nature Conservation (now Pro Natura Valais) and the Monte Rosa section of the Swiss Alpine Club signed an agreement to protect the Binntal, which was a pioneering achievement in the protection of the Alps.

The treaty prohibited the development of hydropower for a period of 100 years and stipulated that no second homes or tourist development facilities would be built.

Treat the unique natural and cultural landscape in the BLN area with respect and protect the flora and fauna by not taking any plants with you, disturbing the animals as little as possible, not leaving any waste lying around and not camping. Thank you very much!

Federal Inventory of Landscapes and Natural Monuments of National Importance

The rear Binntal valley has been included in the Federal Inventory of Landscapes and Natural Monuments of National Importance (BLN). The perimeter is almost congruent with the perimeter of the Binntal nature reserve, but extends along the northern flank of the valley to the municipal boundary in the Twingischlucht gorge. The conservation objectives call for the preservation of the untouched, richly structured mountain landscape with its mountain lakes and geomorphological formations in their original state.

Further information on the BLN areas can be found here.

Other protected areas in the Binntal Landscape Park

The Binntal Landscape Park includes various other protected areas.

Particularly noteworthy are the dry meadows and pastures scattered throughout the park, a large moor landscape of national importance - embedded in the Albrun plateau between Mittlenberghütte, Ofenhorn and Albrunpass - as well as fens of national importance in the Oxenfeld.

All watercourses - in particular the Binna and the Rhone, including tributaries - are also protected areas of the park.

In addition, "recommended wildlife rest areas" have been designated in various places in the park area.

It is not only nature that enjoys excellent protection in the Binntal Landscape Park; cultural achievements also benefit from it. The historic village centers and hamlets are so well preserved that they are of cantonal and national importance and are listed in the Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites (ISOS).
