The Twingi Experience: Botany
Tremendous, this gorge: How do plants cope with the steep rock sides, the plunging water, the unstable avalanche runnels? Find out which plants can live here on this pleasant walk.
The Twingi offers a variety of habitats thanks to the specially structured topography. The dry sites of the rocks and the steep, slippery landslides are important. Plants that do not tolerate competition from other plants feel at home here. One rarity is the Valais levkoje! Its main purple flowering occurs in June, but discovering its fruits is no less exciting.
Water trickles incessantly over limestone tufa rocks. Sour grasses dominate, including the striking, rare rusty red head rush.
The inaccessibility of the left bank of the valley has preserved a near-natural mountain forest, a "primeval forest" so to speak. The Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) placed it under protection as a natural forest reserve in 2010. Which tree species can we find here (binoculars!), which along the path, which in the steep avalanche gullies? Find out more on the pleasant hike along the historic road with its ancient tunnels.
