Future of small-scale rye cultivation in the Upper Valais

On the afternoon of Saturday, February 17, 2024, everything revolved around the topic of cereal cultivation in Valais at the Ritz station in Niederwald. The Binntal Landscape Park invited a group of experts to an event on the topic of "Does small-scale rye cultivation have a future in Valais?".

Luzia Carlen opened the event with information on the current exhibition at the Ritz station on the subject of "Craft and mouthwork". As part of the Sustainable Mountain Art (SMART) project, Mongolian photographer Sunderiya Erdenesaikhan emphasized the importance of traditional Valais food and the craftsmanship associated with it.

Presentations by recognized experts

The presentations by the panel of experts provided in-depth insights into the historical and current significance of rye cultivation, its challenges and opportunities. Laura Kuonen, Co-Managing Director of Erlebniswelt Roggen Erschmatt, shed light on the historical development of rye cultivation and the importance of preserving the cultural landscape. The special features of the adaptable and robust rye were also explained. Tony Chastonay spoke passionately about the successful creation of a regional value chain by the Grafschaft Kultur cooperative. Over the past ten years, they have succeeded in mapping the entire value chain in Goms, from cultivation to harvesting, cleaning, milling and processing. André Summermatter then spoke about an innovative hop project in the Binntal Landscape Park, which has resulted in a completely regional beer. A grain project is now also planned for the landscape park, in which the agri-food chain is to be organized in a targeted manner. Andreas Weissen rounded off the discussion with insights into the mechanization of grain harvesting on small plots.

The panel discussed key issues relating to mechanization, the focus of rye production today, critical success factors, the promotion of volunteer work and the impact of climate change on rye cultivation. It became clear that a combination of quality, innovation, passion and expertise is crucial for the future of rye cultivation.
