Plant: Alpine juniper grows as a low-lying shrub on rocky ground. Only the female plants bear fruit, which in botanical terms are not berries but cones. It takes three years from flowering to the ripe, black-blue cones.
In Valais, in the absence of palm trees, juniper branches were used instead on Palm Sunday. Some locals therefore know the plant as "Paume".
Wild: The mythical incense plant juniper has been considered life-preserving since ancient times. The berries have a germicidal, digestive and antispasmodic effect.
