Historic village Mühlebach
Make a stop in the small hamlet and look at the sunburned houses: Mühlebach has the oldest village centre in Switzerland of timber construction. Here there is a signposted house trail leading to objects worthy of seeing.
The suspension bridge crosses the Lammaschlucht gorge, 92 metres above the rushing Rhone river. The walkway made of locally sourced larch wood is wide enough to accommodate not only hikers but also wheelchair users and pedestrians with bikes.
The municipality of Bellwald belonged to the parish of Ernen up until 1697. The path through the Lammaschlucht gorge was well used for centuries. The path over the Rhone was also popular as a hiking route. However, it was difficult to maintain the path; the steep slopes suffered frequent landslides.
This led to the idea of replacing the path with a suspension bridge. After several years of planning and construction, the bridge was opened on 14 June 2015. "Goms Bridge" suspension bridge connects the two hiking areas of Bellwald and Ernen. It connects Bellwald to the national cycle route no. 1 (Rhone route from Gletsch to Lake Geneva). Through Ernen-Mühlebach, there is a direct link to the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn.
The suspension bridge is open all year round.
