Darkness into the light
Dark into light. The magic of the night and the dark side of light
An exhibition on the topic of night darkness with playful elements and tips on how to deal with light
The discovery and development of artificial light has changed people's lives dramatically over the centuries. Artificial light sources brought prosperity and new freedoms. They made it possible for people to study, work or pursue various leisure activities even after sunset. Lighting in cities and along transport routes increased the feeling of safety at night and promoted social life in the evening.
However, this development also has its downsides: The amount of light emitted and reflected upwards has more than doubled in Switzerland since the mid-1990s. The artificial brightening of the night sky has a negative impact on people and nature, not only in the vicinity of larger cities, but increasingly also in peripheral regions.
In the Binntal Landscape Park, there are still areas where light pollution is minimal. However, light pollution is also increasing here. With the ‘Dark into the Light’ exhibition, the Binntal Landscape Park aims to raise awareness of the issue of light pollution and show that natural night-time darkness is a precious commodity that needs to be protected.
The exhibition runs from 25 May to 16 November 2025 and is open daily from 9 am to 7 pm.
